Enhancing Market Confidence…
Product Recalls Aim to Protect Consumer Health and Safety
Recalls involve the withdrawal of defective or hazardous goods from the market by the provider, the competent entity or the relevant authority in either the UAE, the country of origin or any other country. The recall of defective goods is overseen by the Competition and Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry of Economy, in collaboration with the goods manufacturers and agents in the UAE. This procedure aims to protect the rights, health and safety of consumers as well as to safeguard the rights of retailers and manufacturers; while maintaining the stability of UAE markets.
Product Recall Services are Relevant to all Consumer Segments
This service allows providers, manufacturers and agents of goods to report any defective goods, by completing a recall application, through which such defective or hazardous goods may be withdrawn from the market. It also enables all members of the community to view the said goods, detect goods that do not conform to specifications and standards and which may be detrimental to the health and safety of consumers. The service is a point of reference to all consumer goods and services recalled by the competent entities, while serving to publish certain information and regulations pertaining to the recall system.
Steps Taken for Product Recall
The recall of defective goods and services from the market involves three key steps - detecting the goods, verifying the presence of the goods and subsequently, recalling the goods from the market. This process is overseen and implemented by the Competition and Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry of Economy, in collaboration with all relevant entities, as follows:
Submit the commodity recall request (there is a specified document)
- Fill out the advertising template document in accredited newspapers
- Check the recall documents and ensure that the necessary data is provided
- Send the document with approval or modification on the recall and publish the recall notice through the press
- Complete all recall procedures with client and undertaking to receive service (provision of management report)
